Smoking Linked to Lung Cancer

In many of the developed countries Lung Cancers is either at the Top of the list or comes in second or third as being the most common form of Cancer. There is no doubt the the relationship between cigarettes and smoking is clear and defined.

Smoking and lung cancer

In fact it has become clear that in most cases where individuals have contracted lung cancer it can be related to cigarette smoking. Although there are some individuals who have never smoked who also contract this disease, but on average almost 9 our of 10 individuals who contract this disease are smokers. So we don't need to be a genius to see the link does exist.

It is generally considered that the more you smoke then the more likely it will be that you will get lung cancer, but the quantity of smokes are not the only factor, the length of time spent smoking plays a huge part.

It has been determined that the smoke itself seems to be the connection with lung cancer, as passive smoking (breathing in other people's cigarette smoke) does increase the risk of lung cancer. It is obvious that this group is far less but it has been proven to exist, which is why smoking in many work places has now been prohibited.

The risk of developing lung cancer starts to go down the moment you stop smoking. So any time is the right time to quit.

Facts about smoking and lung cancer

  • The more you smoke, the more likely you are to get lung cancer
  • The length of time you have been a smoker also plays a role, and to some degree this plays a larger role
  • There is no real proof that Filtered and low tar cigarettes lesson the risk of contracting lung cancer. Whilst it seems applicable, most smokers cancel out the good points of smoking these types of cigarettes by taking deeper puffs of their smokes.
  • The moment you cease being a smoker your risk of contracting lung cancer starts to go down
  • Passive smoking (breathing in other people's cigarette smoke) increases the risk of lung cancer. It is obvious that this is far less than being a smoker, but if you give up cigarettes then its not a good idea to spend you time in enclosed spaces with someone who is smoking.

Cigarette smoking considered to be the main cause of lung cancer. Those who smoke a pipe or a cigar are in fact less likely to catch lung cancer than cigarette smokers, but they are more likely to get lung cancer than non smokers.

Another interesting point is that those who smoke a pipe or a cigar are also more likely to get cancer of the mouth or lip.

It was once more common to find a man with lung cancer then to see a women with this same cancer. But as social equality changed the landscape of the world so too has this changed the landscape of the divide between men and women and lung cancer. It is now almost as common to see a women with lung cancer as a man.
