Addiction - What is Addiction

This word has been chucked around for years and has now been associated with all types of topics from being addicted to sex, eating chocolate, drugs, shopping, soap operas, carrots, life, chewing finger nails.....

Some of the topics called Addiction are really just habits, such as chewing finger nails... But Addiction is very real and when placed in the same sentence as smoking it becomes a very real and health problem.

The word addiction simply means that an individual has developed a relationship or a dependence, with substances, objects, events and people, whether they are destructive or non-destructive.

There have been various studies which contradict each other. Some studies have been undertaken which tell us that nicotine is an addictive substance, while others tell us that it is no more addictive than sugar.

But it is generally accepted that there is a psychological element to smoking, and the addictive behavior which is associate with it becomes the mechanism behind the smoke addiction.

So what exactly could your addiction to smoking be?

You obviously know that you are hooked on cigarettes as you cannot do without them for even a day. But what you may not know is that your addiction is a subconscious connection or association to the things you do when you smoke.

To give you an example of what I am talking about, ask yourself these questions,

  • What is one of the first things that comes to mind when you are having a sip of coffee?

  • What appears on your mind when you sit down to have a cold beer?

  • What comes to mind when after you have completed a sumptuous meal?

  • What is the first action you take when you have a break ?

  • What suddenly come to mind as you start driving your car ?

  • What is your reaction to walking into a situation where you need a little extra courage ?

  • Smoking!..Smoking!....Smoking!....

There is a mountain of research which has been undertaken over the last couple of decades which point the the links between smoking and the unconscious triggers which set off our desires to light up.

Many companies have invested thousands of dollars to come up with pills to help us gain the will power to create new habits by adding a chemical into the chain. Why, because they know that even though there might be an addictive craving to the nicotine they know that the psychological triggers are far more potent.

This is why so much research is now going into programs which has the ability to break the psychological links to the subconscious mind, such as EFT and hypnotherapy....
